the road to Mac – part 2

November 20, 2008

So, switching has been interesting. As I stated before I really missed Visio, so yesterday I downloaded Omnigraffle 5 Pro. Omnigraffle is hands down the best diagraming software I’ve tried on Mac, BUT it also has some major flaws like the complete lack of any decent stencils for diagraming networks. I found a pretty simple work around if you own a license for both Visio and OmniGraffle Pro. Simply, open up a group of stencils in visio without opening a diagram (File->Shapes) and then save them as an XML Stencil. You can then copy these files to ~/Library/Application Support/OmniGraffle/Stencils/ on your Mac, when you open OmniGraffle you should see your new stencils ! They may not behave 100% as they would in visio, but its at least a start. Here is a copy of the stencils I imported…. at least until I get a C&D ;)
