Working on my new lab setup

May 18, 2009

So, I purchased a couple extra routers, and a second layer3 switch from @usedciscoguy. He gave me a really good deal and I plan on purchasing a 6500 series switch from him as soon as I can afford it. Anyway…. I’ve spent a little bit of time working on a new topology that should allow me some flexability. I did realize today that I’ve run out of asynchronous serial ports on my 2511 though.. I am now in the market for a NM-32A and maybe a 3620 to run it on… maybe. I figure I can sell the 2511 for close to what I can buy a -32 for, so there wont be too much of a cost incurred there…

new rack layout
Here is a pic of where I am on reracking everything. (sorry about the crap iPhone image) The space you see on top is for 3 2610XMs that I’m waiting on, and my 1U ImageStream router. (for integration testing) I have lots of cards to switch around still and obviously even more cabling to redo.

If anyone has any questions about setting up a home lab, please feel free to ask in the comments section below. I plan on publishing tutorials soon on setting up a home access server, and building your own frame switch.

Tony,

Are you using the gromlets that came with the rack or another brand? Also is the rack 2 or 4 post?

I bought the C28U from skeletek (after seeing it on your blog :).

Liking it, but was having an issue mounting a shelf. I see you have 2U gear mounted, so not sure why just my shelf is pulling off. It’s not as heavy as the cisco gear you have mounted.

Thx.

Hey Charles,

Yes, I am using the gromlets / cage nuts that came with my rack. They’re a little cheap, and tend to pop out the back if I’m not careful. I bought the 2U HD rack. I have been pondering buying the longer support legs for it that allow you to convert it to a 4 post later on, but so far I’ve had no need.

I’m wondering.. have you worked with cage nuts before? The only reason I can see them comming out, is if they’re used improperly. You should attach them from behind the face, and then when you tighten the nut is pulled against the back side of the rack… Not sure how to explain. Let me post a picture!

Thanks for posting a question ! I’m glad to hear from any of my readers!!

Yes I have worked with cage nuts before :)

I have other kit (1U cisco 2610 router/3 2500 series routers /2 2924 switches/1 power bar) mounted just fine.

When I attempted to mount the shelf it kept pulling out.

Sorry about that, I just wasn’t sure what you meant. Can you define pulling out ? Not sure what you mean there.

Err… don’t bother with a 6500. Waste of money. Spend it on a 3560.

the only reason i would bother with getting a 6500 was to test various modules such as the FWSM or work with things such as SUP failover, etc.
